The HCPSS 2020-2021 winter athletic season, scheduled to start on January 11, 2021, has been canceled due to the continuing high rates of COVID-19 infection in Howard County. The start of the winter athletic season had been postponed multiple times with the hope that community health metrics would improve in time for a modified season. Unfortunately, at this point, any additional postponement would result in a competition season of a maximum of one week due to the required number of practice days required by the state.
Howard County continues to regularly remain above 6% COVID-19 test positivity rate and a case rate of more than 30 per 100,000. The decision not to move forward with winter athletics aligns with the majority of Maryland counties and the health metrics adopted by the Board of Education.
Understandably, this decision will be very disappointing for student-athletes and their families who had last year’s winter season cut short and this year’s season canceled due to the pandemic. Winter athletic coaches will continue to engage and support student-athletes virtually through the scheduled conclusion of the season on February 13.
The fall athletics season is scheduled to begin in-person practices on February 13, 2021, with the hope that the distribution of a vaccine will significantly improve the community health metrics. Online registration for fall athletics will begin on January 12, 2021, via HCPSS Connect.
HCPSS takes the safety and well-being of its students, staff and families seriously, and hopes that all its stakeholders are staying safe during this difficult time. Thank you for your understanding and continued collaboration as we stay safe, healthy and able to focus on instruction and learning.
The winter athletic season, previously scheduled to start on January 4, 2021, is postponed until January 11, 2021. This will allow time following the winter break for staff to assess the current health environment and prepare for the return to athletics the following week.
On November 16, HCPSS originally made the decision to suspend all current in-person opportunities effective Thursday, November 19. Howard County continues to regularly remain above 5% COVID-19 test positivity rate and a case rate of more than 30 per 100,000. HCPSS will regularly monitor health metrics and update staff and the community the week following winter break.
HCPSS takes the safety and well-being of all of our students, staff and families very seriously, and hope that you are staying safe during this difficult time. Thank you for your understanding and continued collaboration as we stay safe, healthy and able to focus on teaching and learning.
The winter athletic season, previously scheduled to start on December 7, 2020, is postponed until January 4, 2021. Virtual athletics sessions will continue and online registration for winter athletics will remain open via HCPSS Connect. Directions can be found online. Additional information and schedules will be provided to families closer to that time.
Due to the recent rapid escalation of COVID-19 cases in Howard County, and in consultation with the Howard County Health Department (HCHD), in-person athletic conditioning, previously scheduled to begin on Monday, November 16, is canceled.
HCPSS will now focus efforts on preparing for a safe and successful start to the winter athletic season beginning on December 7, and in accordance with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) plan for reopening high school interscholastic athletics. While there will be no in-person conditioning opportunities at this time, coaches may continue to engage student-athletes virtually. HCPSS will continue to monitor metrics related to the COVID-19 pandemic and provide regular updates should the rising cases impact the December 7, 2020 scheduled start.
Please know that we take the safety and well-being of all of our students, staff and families very seriously, and hope that you are staying safe during this difficult time. Please visit the HCHD website for information related to the COVID-19 virus and how to remain safe.
