January 16, 2019

  • Attention all current 9 - 11th grade students:  Course registration ends this Friday, January 18th!  It is important that you register for seven courses and three alternates through Synergy.  We will have computers available at ALL lunches this week.  Counselors and other staff will be available to help you.  Go ahead and make your course requests - your counselor will meet with you in early February to confirm and make adjustments if necessary.  Please take care of this today!
  • Did you miss the Gifted and Talented Independent Research and Intern/Mentor program information night?  If so, the presentation is available online at Dr. Kiehl's website.  Applications for both classes are available in the media center and through the school's website!

  • Come to the Gifted and Talented Independent Research and Intern/Mentor program information night with Dr. Kiehl on this evening at 7 pm in the media center.
  • Students interested in Dance Placement Auditions should attend an information, questions and answer session during Viking Time tomorrow, Wednesday, in room dance studio.
  • The sophomore class is hosting a fundraiser this Wednesday evening at Go Primo Italian restaurant on Marriottsville Rd.  Come eat pizza and support the class of 2021.
  • The Ice Vikes will be taking on Atholton at 3:20 Thursday afternoon at the Garden's Ice House in Laurel.
  • The Mickey Mouse/Disney club will meet this Friday in room 201 at 2:10 to finish up the movie we started last week.

  • Mt. Hebron's BSU Lip Sync battle scheduled for Friday, January 11 has been CANCELLED.
  • All students going on the Theatre/Choir trip to New York City in April are asked to see Mr. Barker or Mr. Hettenbach ASAP.
  • Calling all Sophomore and Junior actors, singers, dancers and musicians.  Did you know there is a new course for all of you aspiring Broadway stars?  Musical theatre will be offered in the next school year.  Learn all about this American art form and how to be a triple threat in it.  Do what you love and get a grade for it.  See Mr. Barker for more information.

  • Seniors!  It's officially 2019 - Graduation Year!!!  Have you ordered your cap & gown?  Caps and gowns need to be ordered by Monday, January 14.  Any questions, see Mrs. Gutierrez in room 109.

  • The 25th annual Howard County Dance Festival is this Saturday, January 12, at 2 pm at Wilde Lake High School in the Jim Rouse theatre.  The showcase features dance companies from each high school in Howard County including the Mt. Hebron Jr. Company and Dance Company.  Tickets are $8.00 and may be purchase from Ms. Reyes in the dance studio.
  • Not sure which electives to take?  Interested in AP courses?  Curious about the GT program?  Want to learn more about the ARL Academies?  Discover all of this and MORE at the Mt. Hebron Elective Fair this Thursday evening from 6:30 - 8 pm.  Drop in anytime between 6:30 and 8 pm. 
    • Also, new this year at 6 pm in the auditorium for a special AP 101 presentation to learn about AP expectations and offerings.
  • All of those interested in playing JV Boy's lacrosse this spring, there will be a meeting right after school this Wednesday, in room 114, Coach Tittsworth's room.

  • The Disney club invites you to join us Friday, Jan. 4 for a movie after school in room 201 at 2:15.  There will be popcorn.  Rumor has it that the movie will be "Pirates of the Caribbean".
  • The Mt. Hebron ice hockey club invites you to the Garden's Ice House this Friday evening at 730 as we take on the WHOLC Wolves.  This is our senior game, so come on out to support our Ice Vikes as we recognize our seniors.
  • The Los Viking Club will meet next Wednesday, Jan. 9 during Viking time in room 209
  • The MSA will have a meeting today, Thursday, and then next Tuesday, January 8 for all members and non members interested in going to MIST (the Muslim Interscholastic Tournament).  Please meet in room 149 right after school.

  • Attention Technical Vikings - Would you rather build Oz and the Emerald City than be skipping down the Yellow Brick Road?  A brief meeting for all interested student technicians will be this Thursday, Dec. 20, immediately after school in the auditorium.
  • Alpha Achievers schedule change - The sandwich making activity for this afternoon (Tuesday) has been CANCELLED.  However, we will still be mentoring at Patapsco after school if you can volunteer.  Please contact Josh or Mrs. Grimes immediately if you can help.
  • There will be a pizza and cookie sale after school on Wednesday, Dec. 19.  Pizza is $2.00 a slice, and cookies are 2/$1.00.  Help support the sophomore class.

  • The Art club holiday party is today after school.  Refreshments will be served while we socialize and plan upcoming events for the new year.
  • Tryouts for the Wizard of Oz will be held on Monday, Dec. 17 at 6 pm in the auditorium.  If you are thinking about trying out, please pick up an information packet from Mr. Sankey, Mr. Barker or Mr. Hettenbach.
  • The window to apply for membership to Alpha Achievers is now open.  The deadline to apply is Wednesday, Dec. 19.  You can get an application in Student Services next to Mrs. Grimes' door.  See or email Mrs. Grimes with any questions.
  • Current, Alpha Achievers members, remember we are making 100 lunch bags for Grassroots next Tuesday, Dec. 18 after school in Coach Carter's room.  This is our last meeting of the year, don't miss it.

  • If you missed the Alpha Achievers interest meeting today during Viking Time, the deadline to apply for membership is next Wednesday, Dec. 19.  You can get an application in Student Services next to Mrs. Grimes' door.  See or mail Mrs. Grimes with questions.
  • Just a reminder that the After School Activities bus is making an extra run today, Wednesday, Dec. 12.  However, the media center will be closed after school today.
  • The National Social Studies Honor Society will be meeting after school today in the media center.
  • The Hebron Lancers are hosting a pizza and bake sale this Thursday in the front lobby after school.  Please bring your appetite.  Thanks for your support.

December 10, 2018

  • The class of 2022 will be holding a pizza sale after school tomorrow.  Be sure to stop by and buy a slice!
  • This is a reminder that the After School Activity Bus program will offer an extra day this week.  The bus will make a run on Wednesday, Dec. 12.  Be sure to be with an adult and be out at the bus by 4.
  • The Mt. Hebron Ice Vikes will be taking on Marriott's Ridge at 3 today at the Columbia ice rink.  Then on Friday, they will face Glenelg at 7:45  pm at the Ice House in Laurel.  Bring any canned goods or monetary donations because Mr. Tittsworth's 3rd period Leadership class will be there to collect items for the canned food drive.
  • The Red Cross club will meet this Wednesday after school in room 201 at 2:15.  We will be making plans for next week's bake sale and playing a trivia game.
  • The Mickey Mouse club will have its 1st meeting on Friday at 2:15 in room 201.  We will be setting up the format of our club and getting to know one another with a game of Disney trivia!

  • Mt. Hebron is happy to announce that our spring musical is The Wizard of Oz!  Tryouts for the show will be on Monday, December 17, and Tuesday, December 18.  If you are going to try out or thinking about trying out, please pick up an information sheet from Mr. Hettenbach in the choir room, Mr. Barker in the Theatre Arts room, or Mr. Sankey in room 207.
  • There will be a Tri-M Music Honor Society meeting after school on Monday, Dec. 10.  All new and returning members should attend.

  • FBLA members - please make sure you pick a test date by this Friday!  Spots are running out in some of the later testing dates.  Thank you!
  • Attn.:  Students  The reviews are in and Hebron's The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe is a success! In celebration of the outstanding acting, puppetry, and technical magic, we are challenging the classes to show their culture and class with a night at the theatre. 
    • The theatre program wants to see each class show up and show out, maybe even dressed to impress.  So, who is the most cultured class?  Will the seniors reign or will the juniors steal the glory?  Do the sophomores have what it takes to grab the title or will the freshmen outnumber them all?
    • The class that gets the most students from their class to show up at Thursday night's performance will get a minimum of $100.00 donated to their prom/grad party fund.  Tickets for Thursday night's performance will be discounted 50% to $5.00 for all Hebron students.  Tickets can be purchased during lunches or from Mr. Barker or Mr. Sankey.
    • A minimum of 20 students from each class must participate to be eligible to win the donation.
    • In addition, to help our canned food drive, the class that shows up and brings the most canned goods for the food drive to the Thursday night performance can win an additional $50.00 for their prom/grad party fund.
    • So, Vikings!  Prove your class has what it takes and show up to support the Arts at Mt. Hebron!

  • Do you love reading, doing creative writing, or any other activity connected to the English Language Arts?  If you are an 11th or 12th grader with a passion for English, consider applying for the National English Honor Society.  Applicants must have completed two full years of high school, have an overall GPA of 3.5 and a 3.5 or higher in English classes to be considered for induction.  Details and application paperwork can be found on the Honor Societies button on the Canvas page.  Materials are due to Mrs. Shannon DAvis in room 234 by December 18.

  • The Student Choreographers' Showcase is tonight at 530 and 7 pm in the dance studio.  This informal performance features pieces created by the Dance Company and Junior Company based on paintings created by our visual art students.  Admission is free, but REQUIRES a ticket due to limited space.  Please see Ms. Reyes in the dance studio for a ticket.
  • The African Affairs club meeting is tomorrow, Friday, after school.  Bring cardboard boxes to the meeting for the collection of school supplies, beginning next week.

  • The BSU Step Team will be rehearsing in the lower level hallway from 2:30 - 3:15 next Tuesday, November 27, and Thursday, November 29.  Please arrive on time with a good attitude and prepared to work.
  • Once a King or Queen of Narnia, Always a King or Queen of Narnia!
    • Tickets for Mt. Hebron's Theatre's production of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe will go on sale during lunches starting next Monday, November 26.
    • Opening night is November 30 and the show runs the 1st two weekends in December.
    • Come watch the armies of Aslan the Lion (played by Max Nzone, Jennie Hardman, and Nick Pascarelle) battle the forces of the White Witch (played by Nina St. Hillaire) with the help of the Prevensies (played by Joe Nolan, Sam Yakaitis, and Connor Harman).  Over 50 students are involved in this production with original music by Jacob Krell.  Tickets for this amazing production are $10.00.
    • Come out and support your fellow Viking thespian classmates.  See you at the theatre.

  • Attention:  All boys planning on trying out for JV and Varsity basketball, you MUST have completed  and turned in paperwork by tryouts on Thursday.  It is YOUR responsibility to fill out the required paperwork online or bring the forms to Coach Macheel in room 110.  Even if you filled it out online, you will need to come by at some point over these three days to confirm that you are cleared.  Coach Macheel will be in his room today and Thursday after school between 2:30 and 3:30 specifically for paperwork collection and confirmation.  See him with questions in room 110.
  • The Future Medical professionals will be meeting after school in room 215 tomorrow, Wednesday.
  • Underclassmen portrait make up day is December 13.  Students who were absent for underclassmen portrait day or bought a package and wish to re-take their photos can do down during their English class time to get their portraits taken.  Please email Ms. Fishchetti with any questions.
  • The FINAL school date for Senior Portraits is January 8.  If you are unable to do this date, please call Lifetouch at 410 644-7700 to schedule an appointment at their Baltimore studio.  Please note that studio appointments have a $10 sitting fee.  The dealline for formal drape/tux senior portraits is January 31.  If you took your portrait for Lifetouch, please select your yearbook choice by January 31 online, this will be how you submit it.  If you are submitting a portrait from an outside photographer, please visit the yearbook page on the school website under "student life".  Please email Ms. Fishchetti with any questions.
  • There is a rehearsal today after school at 2:15 in the auditorium for all Fine Arts PRISM performers.  Also, for those approved by their teachers, the cast of GLOW, including Jr. Company will be meeting during 6th period today.
  • How is your knowledge about France and all things Francophone?  Come to room 128 tomorrow, Wednesday, Nov. 14, during Viking Time to test that out!  We will be playing a trivia game hosted by member of the French Honors Society.  There will be prizes for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners.  We hope to see you there!

  • Attn:  Students interested in trying out for a winter sport:  Boys and Girls basketball, wrestling, winter cheer, track, and allied bowling.  There is a mandatory candidate and parent meeting at 6:30 pm in the auditorium this Monday night, November 12.  After the general meeting, each team will break out to discuss information regarding their specific sport.

  • The PRISM Fine Arts Gala is next Wednesday, November 14 in the auditorium.  The event begins at 6:30 pm with a gallery walk showcasing artistic talents of our visual arts students.  The performing arts concert begins at 7 pm and features collaborative work from the music, dance, television and theatre programs.  Admission is free.  We look forward to seeing you there!

  • There is a Red Cross meeting today after school in Ms. Vealey's room 201.  We will be receiving a presentation from our Regional Coordinators, brainstorming new project ideas, and starting member registration on Volunteer Connections.  We hope to see everyone there!
  • Students who received "Family File" information today are reminded to return completed forms to the front office on Thursday, Monday, October 22, at the latest.
  • Mt. Hebron's Ice Hockey club will host Howard on Thursday, October 18, at the Columbia ice rink at 3 pm.
  • The girls Volleyball program is hosting a brain cancer awareness game this Thursday, Oct. 18 against Wilde Lake.  Come out and support!
  • Juniors - if you are interested in the NSA work-study program for your senior year, applications are due by October 31.  Positions include clerical, technical, and computer science opportunities.  You can couple the computer science position with Intern/Mentor and receive credit in addition to the paid internship.  See your counselor or Dr. Kiehl in room 109 for application information.
  • Seniors - Bal-Four will be here next Tuesday and Wednesday, October 23 and 24, during all lunches to help with Cap and Gown orders.  In the event that you can't make it, please go to balfour.com to order the caps and gowns and anything else graduation-related.

  • 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students, during Viking Time this Wednesday, you will be staying  in your 2nd period class to have a study hall.  Some students will be given a pass during this time to come to either the media center or cafeteria to complete the family file.  You will not be able to leave your 2nd period class unless a pass is given to you.
  • All seniors will report to the auditorium during Viking Time for a mandatory senior meeting.
  • The interest meeting for Boys JV and Varsity Basketball originally scheduled for Viking Time this Wednesday is cancelled.  Listen for announcements about the re-scheduled time.

  • Please join us for the 1st meeting of the Junior World Affairs Club!  This club is for those of you interested in connecting with events going on in our world in order to make a difference.  Service hours will be provided.  We will meet in room 128 after school this Friday, October 12.  We hope to see you there!

  • Attention all boys interested in trying out for JV and Varsity basketball this season.  There will be a mandatory meeting during Viking Time on Wednesday, Oct. 17 in Coach Ettinger's room 103.   • There will be a marching unit practice tonight.  All students will need to move their cars from the student lot before 5 pm and then the lot will be closed to through traffic.
  • There will be a Tri-M music honor society meeting next Monday, October 15, right after school in the band room for all returning and interested members.
  • Key club is meeting today in room 126 right after school today.  Anyone who is interested in joining the club or current members should come.
  • Tomorrow, Tuesday, October 9, is our flu clinic.  It will begin at 7:30.  Please listen for the all call when you should come to the auditorium to receive your flu vaccine.
  • Best buddies will hold its 1st chapter meeting after school this Wednesday, October 10 in the cafeteria.  Be sure to register online at bestbuddiesonline.org.

  • Applications for the Mt. Hebron National Science Honor Society are now available!!  Find the link to the application either on the announcement page of the MHHS student community section of Canvas or look for the flyers in your science classes!  All the directions for the applications are on the link, and the applications should be typed up and turned in by Wednesday, Oct. 31 to either Mr. Blocklin or Ms. Mongano.
  • If you are a current junior or senior and have a passion for Social Studies, consider applying for Rho Kappa, the Social Studies National Honors Society.  You can pick up an application from room 113, or on the Canvas page.  Applications are due by Oct. 5.

  • Any freshman interested in the SGA freshman representative position needs to turn their application into Mrs. Engelstatter in the Media Center as soon as possible.

  • There will be marching unit practice this evening at 5 pm.  All students will need to move their cars before hand.  Parking lot will be closed to thru traffic.
  • Would you like to be part of our School Flag crew?  Students interested in learning how to properly fold both the American and Maryland state flag as well as being part of our team who raises them up the flagpole and takes them down each day, should stop by the front office and give them your name.  We'll contact everyone who's interested in the next few weeks.
  • There will be a South Asia club meeting tomorrow, Friday, after school in room 222.
  • Yearbooks are here!  Students who already purchased yearbooks will have them delivered in their 5th and 6th period classes today and tomorrow, Thursday and Friday.  Early release students will have them delivered earlier in the day.  For those that have not purchased a 2018 years can do so today, Thursday, Sept. 27, and October 1, 3, 9 and 11 for $85.00.  Students can also purchase yearbooks before 7 am or after school at 2:40 pm in room 232.  Yearbooks are limited - only 18 remain!  Don't miss your chance  to hold onto your Viking memories from the 2017-2018 school year.

  • Try to remember this this September is the first Hebron Theatre studio production of . . .The Fantasticks, the longest running musical in history.  Join the Hebron Thespians as they present this classic musical about when a boy meets a girl and the day after they fall in love.  Featuring Joe Nolan, Leah Reineck, Jake Scarbath, Ian Luk, Max Nzone, Ryan McClure, Kevin Aguilera, and Kaegan Stottlemeyer and directed by Jennie Hardman and choreographed by San Yakaitis.
    • The Fantasticks has a limited run with only 2 showings on Friday, Sept. 28 at 7 pm and Sunday, Sept. 30 at 2 pm.  Seating is limited, tickets are $10.00 and can be purchased online, at the door, or at all lunches starting today, Wednesday, Sept. 26.  Come on out and support the tradition of the Hebron stage.  See the Fantasticks before it's gone.

  • Do you have the desire to learn more about the specifics of a medical career, participate in community service, or meet real doctors?  Then come down to the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) 1st meeting of the year which will be held directly after school tomorrow in room 209.  All with any inclination towards medicine are welcome.
  • Best Buddies will hold an information meeting for all students interested in being peer buddies or associate members on Wednesday, Sept. 26 after school in the cafeteria.  Be sure to sign up on Canvas if you are interested in joining Best Buddies.
  • The African Affairs club is meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, Sept. 26 in room 152 immediately after school.  All students interested in celebrating African culture should attend this first meeting.  There will be snacks.
  • If you are planning to attend the Homecoming Dance, please remember that no tickets will be sold to students with obligations or an incomplete family file.  Please take care of this now, so you can purchase your Homecoming ticket.
  • The Red Cross club will hold its initial meeting this Thursday, Sept. 27 in room 201 from 215 - 300.  All are welcome.
  • As a reminder, beginning today, the Media Center will be open until 345 on Tuesdays and Thursdays for students who would like to study, use the computers, work on group projects or receive tutoring. 
  • The Activity bus also begins today.  Stop by the front office if you still need to get a permission slip for your parent to sign.  You must have a signed permission slip in order to ride the bus.  The bus runs Tuesdays and Thursday and leaves at 4 from the front of the school.
  • Students - are you interested in playing volleyball during Viking Time?  We will open the gym for a small group of students to participate in different activities each week.  Make sure to sign up and get your pass for the gym at lunch TODAY!  Students will not be permitted without a pass.

    • Hebron's Shakespeare Troupe, the Scoundrels, will have its 1st meeting Tuesday, Sept. 25, immediately after school in room 136.  Join Troupe Leaders Alex Clay and Dom Martin, as they put together a rag-tag company of players to explore the texts of Love Labours Lost and the Scottish Play!  This is no fear Shakespeare at its finest.  No experience necessary.  Bring your wits and be ready for fun.
  • Whose Line is It Anyway?
    • Are you quick on your feet and funny at a moment's notice?  Come out next Monday, Sept. 24 for the HIT (Hebron Improv Team).  Join Hebron's own ACI team members, Bonnie Vess and Julia Medina as they field the future funny people of the Viking Team.  No experience necessary, come out for fun and laughs.

    • Are you a poet, painter or photographer?  Are you a choreographer, composer or cinematographer?  The PTSA Reflections program is, a local, regional and national competition that for 50 years has been celebrating the best artists in each school providing recognition and scholarships for excellent work.  The theme of this year's competition is "Heroes Around Me".  This call for Art started Sept. 17 and submissions will be due Nov. 1.  Submissions will be evaluated the 1st week of November and best of show will be celebrated and recognized at the Prism concert on Nov. 14.
    • If you are a viking artist, dancer, music maker, filmmaker or writer, see your art of English teacher for an application.  You can also see the bulletin board in the Music/Theatre hallways for an application and informaiton.

  • There will be an interest meeting for Ultimate Frisbee Friday after school in room 146.  All interested and current members should attend.  No experience is necessary.
  • There is a South Asian club meeting Friday after school in room 222.  All are welcome.
  • There is a wrestling team interest meeting next Tuesday, Sept. 18 after school in Coach Harman's room 156.  All current and interested wrestlers should plan to attend.
  • The first meeting for French club is next Tuesday, Septm. 18 after school in room 128.  Come for food and fun.  We will also plan our activities for the year.  If you miss the 1st meeting, you are more than welcome to come to later meetings.  Hope to see you there!

  • Delta Scholars - To start off the year we will be having our first general meeting on Tuesday, September 11, after school.  The meeting will be held in the media center and will start at 2:15.  This is a mandatory meeting for all returning members - see you there!
  • Hey Hebron!  Do you like milk and cookies?  Do you know what soh-cah-toa means?  Do you like solving math problems?  Well, Math team is the group for you.  The first Math team meeting will be next Wednesday, September 12 from 2:15 - 3:00 in Mrs. Kingsley's room, 220.  This will be an informational meeting as well as the qualifier for our first Math team meet.  Hope to see you Wednesday, in room 220.  Remember, you can't spell Math with MTH!

  • The Sophomore class board will be meeting tomorrow, Thursday, after school in room 114.
  • Hebron Theatre!
    • Be sure to join us this Friday, immediately after school until 4 pm for the first theater guild meeting of the year.  Learn about all the opportunities on the Viking stage - tech crew, improv troupe, Shakespeare troupe, New York trips and more.  Meet the officers, eat some snacks, play some games.
    • The fantastic world of Narnia awaits you.  Auditions for the fall production of the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe start this Saturday, September 8, with the fight workshop from 9-3.  Students only need to attend 2 hours of the workshop and can sign up online.
    • Auditions are September 12, 13 and 14 from 3 - 6 pm.  No experience is necessary.  Roles of all sizes, from dwarf to giant, available.  For more information, please see Mr. Barker in room 136. 
    • We look forward to seeing everyone at the shows this year.  Whether you're on stage, backstage, or sitting in the house, everyone plays on the Viking stage!
